Gas fuel products

Customers and regulators around the world are demanding cleaner transportation alternatives, particularly in the heavy-duty market. TotalEnergies believes that natural and renewable gases play an important role in the energy transition and are among the fuel solutions of choice for decarbonising passenger and freight transport.

Natural and renewable gas for vehicles

Promoting the use of natural gas as a fuel together with hydrogen and biomethane is a cornerstone of TotalEnergies' strategy and ambition to become the responsible energy major. It is one of the key drivers of TotalEnergies' integrated strategy to expand its low carbon business in the fields of passenger travel and goods transportation.

Natural gas for vehicles, or NGV, is a readily available alternative fuel that, depending on the type of vehicle, can offer significant benefits to your fleet in terms of cost efficiency and reducing your company’s carbon footprint and particulate matter emissions.

Compressed or liquified natural gas

There are two types of NGV fuel: compressed natural gas, or CNG, and liquefied natural gas, or LNG. CNG can be used by many vehicle types but is especially well suited for light vehicles such as passenger cars, buses, vans or trucks. LNG is the most suitable option for heavy vehicles travelling long distances, such as long-haul trucks or marine and fluvial vessels.

The technology used in NGV vehicles is mature, proven and safe, with an increasing offer on the market from established manufacturers. From passenger cars, buses and light trucks for CNG, to heavy trucks, barges and ships for LNG.

NGV offers a cleaner energy alternative for your fleet compared to conventional fuels. An NGV vehicle engine runs quieter and emits less local air pollutants, for example. Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced in particular through the use of bioNGV, which is based on biomethane.

Transitioning all or part of your fleet to natural gas contributes to a lower total cost of ownership: NGV helps extend engine life, requires less frequent tune-ups and maintenance, thus reducing overall overhead and fleet costs.

Hydrogen and green hydrogen

The uptake of hydrogen for mobility, and in particular green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity, is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years. The environmental and practical benefits of driving on hydrogen make it one of the most promising alternative fuels for tomorrow's sustainable mobility, particularly in heavy transport.

Whilst the number of fuel cell electric vehicles is still modest today, TotalEnergies is developing numerous hydrogen projects to prepare the market for wider H2 mobility adoption.

CNG & bioCNG

CNG stands for compressed natural gas, which is natural gas fuel stored under high pressure, between 200 and 250 bar. Biomethane or bioCNG is the fully renewable variant of CNG.

LNG & bioLNG

LNG is liquefied natural gas, obtained by cooling the gas to between minus 120-162 degrees Celsius. LNG is the best alternative fuel solution currently available for long-haul transport.

Hydrogen & renewable hydrogen

Hydrogen is a powerful energy carrier that can be used in fuel cells to generate electricity to power vehicles. Driving on hydrogen is clean: no greenhouse gases or pollutants are emitted from the vehicle exhaust.
