How Does Refuelling Work for (Renewable) Hydrogen?
(Renewable) Hydrogen
Gaseous hydrogen vehicles are refuelled using a secure nozzle system that is similar in use and refuelling time to conventional fuels, making the process familiar and straightforward for drivers. Depending on the vehicle type, (renewable) hydrogen is dispensed at different pressure levels, and it is therefore important to use the correct nozzle—350 bar for certain vehicles, and 700 bar for most passenger cars and in future also buses and heavy duty trucks.
Liquid hydrogen as a fuel, will follow a different refuelling approach. Its refuelling process is expected to be comparable to that of (bio)LNG, involving cryogenic handling and specific safety procedures. If this technology becomes mature, liquid hydrogen could support applications requiring higher energy density and longer driving ranges.
What refuelling solutions are available for (renewable) hydrogen?
Depending on vehicle types, routes and operational requirements, several refuelling solutions are available for (renewable) hydrogen. Developed and deployed through decades of experience, these solutions have been implemented by TotalEnergies affiliates and Joint Venture Partners and reflect proven operational standards. From public multi fuel stations to dedicated fleet refuelling installations, they all support reliable, safe and efficient refuelling.
