Growing in natural gas, the lowest-carbon fossil fuel, is a cornerstone of TotalEnergies’ strategy and ambition to become the responsible energy major, and one of the key drivers for its commitment to provide tangible solutions to mitigate climate change.

Speed up the energy transition

It is TotalEnergies' ambition to provide better energy that is ever more affordable, cleaner, more reliable and accessible to as many people as possible. TotalEnergies is also focused on innovation, and staying ahead of the changing energy needs of its customers all around the world.

TotalEnergies' low-carbon strategy

This ambition is supported by the strategy of TotalEnergies to develop as a global multi-energy company, with gas, electricity, renewables, liquids and carbon-neutrality solutions as integrated parts of its business. Growing in natural gas is a key driver to decarbonize our energy mix.

Climate change major challenges

Concerning climate change, TotalEnergies identified three major challenges:

  • Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, including methane, from our operated oil and gas activities.
  • Contributing to reduce the carbon intensity of products used by our customers.
  • Detecting and supporting effective technologies and initiatives for addressing climate change.

Our climate ambition net zero by 2050

In May 2020, TotalEnergies announced its new climate action plan to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050 together with society for its global business across its production and energy products used by its customers. Decarbonizing natural gas with biogas and hydrogen as well as continuing to reduce methane emissions will contribute to TotalEnergies' climate ambition.

The climate integrated into our strategy

TotalEnergies is addressing the challenges of climate change by developing tangible solutions in four strategic focus areas:

  • Natural gas, biogas and hydrogen: allies of the energy transition - Expand our presence across the entire natural gas chain, reduce our methane emissions and make LNG more energy efficient.
  • Electricity - Expand our operations in the non-regulated portion of the value chain (i.e. excluding power transmission), from power generation using renewables and natural gas to sales to end customers and energy storage (batteries and hydrogen).
  • Liquids - Avoid expensive oil, reduce emissions at our facilities, and promote both sparing oil use and sustainable biofuels.
  • Carbon neutrality - Develop businesses that will help achieve carbon neutrality by providing energy efficiency services to our customers and investing in natural carbon sinks such as forests, and wetlands and in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

TotalEnergies' NGV ambition

In line with its strategic ambitions for natural gas and renewable energy, TotalEnergies plans to expand its worldwide NGV networks to more than 2,600 CNG and LNG refueling stations by 2030, with a 100% biomethane share in Europe.

This includes growing the network of our joint ventures and participations. For example, in the U.S., through its participation in Clean Energy Fuels, TotalEnergies aims to operate more than 600 (bio)NGV stations by 2030, including more than 45 (bio)LNG sites. In India, through its joint venture with India's Adani Group, TotalEnergies aims to operate more than 1,800 CNG stations by 2030.

TotalEnergies’ hydrogen for mobility ambition

Early 2023, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide announced their decision to create an equally owned joint venture to develop a network of hydrogen stations geared towards heavy duty vehicles on strategic European road corridors. The partners aim to deploy more than 100 hydrogen stations, under the TotalEnergies brand, on major roads mostly in France, Benelux and Germany in the coming years.
