On Thursday 11 February, 2021, TotalEnergies and Sigeif Mobilités inaugurated the Gennevilliers CNG station in the presence of Jean-Baptiste Djebarri, Minister Delegate for Transport. The largest CNG station to date in France is located just outside Paris, at the Port of Gennevilliers. Dedicated to the distribution of natural gas for vehicles (NGV) in compressed natural gas (CNG) format, it has been operational since August 2020, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with 4 large lanes. 

This is the first time in France that a CNG station is supplied by the GRTgaz network at high pressure, saving energy to reach 250 bar, the operating pressure for filling CNG vehicle tanks. This TotalEnergies-Sigeif Mobilités NGV station, located in the north-west of the Île de France, is perfectly integrated into its logistical environment. It will thus contribute to the adoption of CNG by many companies. 

With its TotalEnergies and AS24 brands, the TotalEnergies Company is committed to opening 110 stations in France by 2025.The Gennevilliers station is the 17th in the country. For transport, goods or passengers, CNG is the main current alternative fuel solution included in the energy transition and recognised under the French LOM legislation (Loi d'Orientation des Mobilités) and the Low Emission Zone (ZFE, Zone à Faibles Emissions).

A construction project: a new NGV station in ÎIle-de-France

2018 - An enrgy transition project that blends into its surroundings

Jean-Michel Philip – Managing Director – Sigeif Mobilités Like the others, this project was assigned to Total following a call for tender process. Total was selected simply because they submitted the best bid for the project. The Gennevilliers project was carried out in the port of Gennevilliers, which provided us with quite a large plot of land to be able to build a station able to cater to the port of Gennevilliers, where numerous companies are based. We were able to finance the project with a European subsidy that allowed us to fund 8 stations, among other projects.

Guillaume Larroque – President – Total Marketing France We now have the biggest NGV station in France. It’s a wonderful asset allowing us to work towards our NGV ambitions. We’re thankful to Sigeif and the region for selecting us as partners to support them in the energy transition. This project really demonstrates how committed we are to this issue. Our customers will now be able to use an alternative energy source which is compatible with the use of logistics in low-emission zones. The port of Gennevilliers is Europe’s biggest inland port. It’s highly relevant when it comes to logistics. I believe that this project is symbolic and will inspire other cities.

2019 – 2020 – A complex, innovative construction site

Guillaume Larroque From a technical point of view, the station should satisfy customers. The customer journey should live up to our customers’ expectations. I think we’ve achieved that at this station. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the teams responsible for the project, who, I think, have done a very good job. Thank you very much. It’s our customers who will be thankful next, and that’s the most important.

Jean-Michel Philip We had the opportunity to connect to the gas transmission network, providing us with very high pressure and requiring less electrical power to compress the gas, making the project particularly environmentally friendly.

August 2020 – The station opens to customers

Guillaume Larroque The fact that it’s the biggest station isn’t important in itself; what’s important is that it offers a seamless user experience. Why? Because there are four lanes, five pumps, and what’s more, customers will be able to fill up with bioNGV. We’re talking about NGV for Gennevilliers, but it’ll actually be CNG or compressed natural gas. Why do we call it bio? Because customers can choose to incorporate 20, 50 or 100% of biomethane into the product.

Jean-Michel Philip The bioCNG that will be distributed at the station will very soon be produced by a biowaste methanisation unit allowing us to sell bioNGV that’s produced locally, just a few hundred metres away.

Olivier Galisson – Dangerous Goods Transport Subsidiary Director – PREMAT Transport - With our drivers, we’ve organized ourselves to reduce the waiting time compared to other stations. The fact that there’s a station near our loading depot, the oil depot in Gennevilliers, is a huge benefit for us. All the more so given how reliable and effective the new station is, reducing the fear we used to have of running out of this type of fuel tens of kilometers away from a station.

Jean-Paul Le Mignot – Dangerous Goods Transport Subsidiary Director – PREMAT Transport There were some concerns initially because gas always raises questions, it’s still something new. We have a new, clean, practical station. There are lots of dispensers, so for us it’s advantageous because we’re right next to it. We leave the depot, we fill up, we head off, we come back, we don’t have any refueling problems anymore. It works and everyone’s happy with it, it’s perfect.

Olivier Galisson It allows us to optimize the routes and optimize the service we offer to our customers.

Jean-Michel Philip By the end of the year, the station in Noisy-le-Grand, which is also being built and operated by Total, will be opened to customers. It’ll be our sixth project.

Guillaume Larroque Another benefit for our customers, who often carry the Total card and the AS24 card, and thanks to them, at this location, they’ll be able to use either card, which ensures that the customer journey runs more smoothly. And I imagine that our drivers, for the end users of this energy, this will also be of great benefit. Safe journey!

Clément Fuertes – Construction Engineer – TOTAL Network Hello and welcome to the port of Gennevilliers. We’re at the Total – Sigeif Mobilités station. And I’m going to take you on a quick technical tour of the site.

A vehicle running on natural gas is less polluting and makes less noise. The vehicles have engines that are designed to run on natural gas. This vehicle, for example, runs on CNG with a pressure of 250 bars it can travel and 500 kilometers on a full tank.

The station is supplied with natural gas from the network of GRTgaz. Compared to the gas network of GRDF, it offers an inlet pressure that is 10 times higher. From the substation, we supply the station’s two compression modules.

The gas is transported the dryer through pipes at a pressure of 40 bar to remove condensation. It then passes through low-pressure filters. From the low-pressure filters, it flows to the compressor. The pressure then increases to 250 bars. The gas passes again through a high-pressure filter and fills the buffer storage. From this buffer storage, we’re able to refuel the vehicles.

The gas is stored at 250 bars in the compressors. It’s then conveyed through prefabricated trenches to the fuel dispensers.

In order to supply the station’s 8 dispensers, we’ve installed two compression modules. These two compression modules work on the redundancy principle: if one of the two compressors don’t work, the other will take over so that the station can continue to operate.

Customers complete their transaction on the self-service machine. They can choose from different products: CNG or bioCNG. Then, they take the nozzle and connect it to their vehicle tank. The unit is euros per kilogram. There are two types of nozzles: NVG1, which is the standard, and NVG2, which allows a slightly improved output. We have both types of nozzles at the station, allowing use to refuel all types of vehicles.

Once the driver has connected the nozzle to the tank, he just has to press the green button. This button starts the distribution of CNG. If they let go of the button, the gas stops flowing for security reasons. The station is fully automated. It’s monitored remotely at all times to guarantee safety for customers and the environment.

When Total responded to the call for tender from Sigeif Mobilités, the challenge was to create a station that offers great efficiency and speed for customers. The station allows up to four vehicles at the same time in less than 10 minutes. The station opened in August 2020. Since then, we’ve sold around 40 tons of gas each month, allowing numerous drivers to deliver goods to the Paris region even at night because the vehicles are much quieter.
